About The Bahamas
The Bahamas are located southeast of Florida, technically the location of the Bahamas is in the North Atlantic Ocean, and not in the Caribbean, yet sometimes the Bahamas are encompassed as being islands of the Caribbean. A significant percentage of those islands are technically cays, or coral reef islands. Only about 30 of the over 170 islands or cays are inhabited.
The name “Bahamas” comes from Spanish, and roughly translates to mean “shallow water.” More than 300,000 people live here, making it a relatively populous country. Since winning its independence from the U.K. in 1973, the Bahamas have flourished. Tourism, in particular, is the main thing driving the economy here, so locals tend to cater to visitors and are very welcoming.
Getting Here
Most people arrive by air into Nassau. If you’re from Florida, arriving by boat is possible also, albeit a long boat ride. American and Delta are the dominant airlines, but there are other major US airlines that offer seasonal or limited flights from major US cities. If you’re coming from Europe, British Airways has regularly scheduled service. I love using Google Flights to find the right flight combo. Then you can book directly from there or check the same flight directly with the airline.
We usually fly American Airlines when making cross country or Eastern Mexico flights. For us that generally means a connecting flight through DFW. DFW is a great airport which also has an AMEX Centurion Lounge in Terminal D if you end up with an extended layover. Be sure to book a car before you arrive. We find great drivers through Trip Advisor. Depending on where you stay, there also may be hotel shuttles. We tend to shy away from the hotel shuttles because there’s usually an extended wait and you’re shoved in with other passengers. It’s only about a 20 minute drive to most of the hotels, but we typically choose comfort over savings.
