The Acropolis
Today was history filled and bucket list worthy as we tour historic Athens Greece. We started with a short motorcoach ride to the Acropolis first thing in the morning to beat the crowds. What an amazing place to experience. Thousands of years of history sitting in the heart of a bustling modern city. The contrast was stunning. Experiencing this place is certainly something to behold. As a builder, the expertise and craftsmanship in building something of this scale with only hand tools is something everyone should see in person. After coming back down the hill, we were glad we got there early and were part of a group. The line for individual tickets was nearly a half mile long and the crowds were growing rapidly.
Ruins Tour & Lunch
From there we toured some other ruins in the city, then enjoyed a gourmet lunch at the Hotel Intercontinental. The architecture, or lack thereof and the economic strain this country has endured is certainly evident as we drive through the city.
Temple of Poseidon
After lunch, we headed 1.5 hours south to the city of Sounio to see the Temple of Poseidon. After a hot, dry climb to the top of the hill to see what was built by hand so many thousands of years ago, is humbling.
Back On Board
Returning to the ship for dinner, we joined Nana to hear all about her “rough day” in the spa watching the ocean off the back to of the ship during her treatments. I think she’s getting used to this.
Wrapping up the evening, Marcus is off to hang with his friends, Nana is looking for a party, Julie is doing acupuncture in the spa and I’m hanging in the Concierge Lounge where I simply sit down and my drink appears without asking – yeah, it’s not too bad, Thanks Jay! The sun is setting as we sail out of Athens and head to tomorrow’s stop, Mykonos.
