Their economy survives a summer off.
Your business can't survive a Tuesday.
That's not a cultural difference. That's a design flaw.
If the company stops when you stop, you didn't build a business. You built a job with a single point of failure — and the point of failure is you.
Permission to Unplug is about fixing that. Not "take more vacation." Building something that grows faster when you're not in it.

Quick, practical one for your feed: your phone is designed like a slot machine — every notification is built to give you a small dopamine hit so you check it again. What's less obvious is that research shows simply having your phone nearby, even silenced, measurably drains your focus. You don't need more willpower to fix this. You need fewer notifications. Turn off everything except texts — email, social, news, shopping apps — and give it three days. Most people are shocked at how much attention comes back. This is one small piece of a bigger focus framework in my new book, Permission to Unplug.

Here's something I didn't fully understand until I started paying attention in suite lounges on cruises and at luxury resorts:
The room self-selects. Most people there are successful — because they paid to be there. And when you start asking questions instead of just small talk, you realize you're sitting in a masterclass on entrepreneurship.
The retired CEO. The founder who just exited. The person who figured out passive income 10 years before everyone else started talking about it.
When you're the least successful person in the room, that's not a problem. That's the point. You get to appreciate up.
Chapters 9 & 10 of Permission to Unplug are about exactly this — being spontaneous on purpose and choosing environments where growth is unavoidable. Watch the full clip and let me know: what's a room that changed how you think?
